- Models model for, oh, 10 years? You don't get 'better with age' - models aren't cheese. They're christmas trees - oh so wonderful for a very short period of time, and then tossed out, lying at the side of the road with decorations still on (points if you get the reference). There is no career progression here.
- Models are freelancers - freelancers get paid more than people who have a steady 9-5 job in every industry. Why? Well, we don't get paid for the time we're travelling (unless you manage to negotiate it) and it involves a lot of travel, you don't get paid for the time spent emailing, booking jobs, bullshitting with time wasters. In fact, you probably won't get paid at all for about 60% of the work that you do. Why? It's not modeling. It's all the groundwork - the marketing, the planning, the placating, the customer service, the preparation. If you break down the amount that a model gets paid into actual hours, it's not much more than your average secretary or office worker. I'd say that you easily spend 3 hours unpaid (doing all the admin etc.) to every hour of shooting.
- Most jobs don't involve being naked.
- Most jobs don't involve contorting yourself into incredibly uncomfortable positions and lying, scantily clad, on a concrete floor while someone fiddles with lights - it's a hard job. Anybody that says otherwise will get kicked in the shins.
- Modeling doesn't require qualifications, no, but on the net you definitely need to put in your time to get the experience to do it.
- Finally: fuck off, it's what the market has decided we're worth. Don't like it, get a blow up doll from Primark and take pics of it.

'Models shouldn't be paid as much as they are'
I put up with this shit quite a bit as a model - it's bullshit. And here's why.
Primark doesn't sell blow-up dolls. Believe me, I have asked on numerous occasions.
ReplyDeleteWell you should just continue writing letters - if you get enough people behind the cause, they'll have to make them. They just don't realised how much money they could make off them.
ReplyDeleteNor should footballers, bunch of shirt pulling sissies, but that's the way it is, we will all work for as much as we can get for our given trade/skill, so one just has to deal with it and stop whining about it.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that why they put the word negotiation in the dictionary?
Really? Have you tried being a professional athlete? Can you do a footballer's job? Do you generate the amount of revenue that a single footballer does (for anyone - a company, via taxes, anything)? No.
ReplyDeleteAnd well done for totally missing the point.
Bravo.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
It wasn't I that missed the point MB, I agree with what you have posted.
ReplyDeleteThere is getting what one is worth and then there is greed, some are worth the price tag and some aren't, for everyone there is negotiation.
Ah well the chicks who ask for £100ph after with their orange-ness and muffin tops obviously aren't getting it - was discussing working models with 'reasonable' rates ;)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I must have missed the bit that said reasonable rates, which is far too subjective anyway, internet model rates at the higher end, skilled and experienced models (like yourself I assume) can be reasonable and in some cases an absolute bargain depending on some variables.
ReplyDeleteI'll go annoy someone else now, but thanks for your work here anyway.
If you've got a talent/look/skill/willing-to-get-naked, and someone wants that talent/look/skill/nakedness, you charge as much as you can get away with.
ReplyDeleteSame as when you go for a "normal" job. Got more skill than minimum requirement to do the job? Negotiate for more pay before taking the job.
Pretty f'kin simple really.
